Hyundai Genesis to Genesis:  A History of Luxury

A Hyundai Genesis-yep, you read that correctly! If you haven't heard of this luxurious creation that was done back in 2007  by South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai, then you are in for a treat! This four-door, 5 passenger full-size luxury sedan was marketed and manufactured by Hyundai, debuting in 2008 as the "Concept Genesis".  Fast forward to 2017, the automakers branched off as Genesis, and they  spun off the 2008 Hyundai Genesis, renaming it Genesis G80. This might be a little confusing, but not to worry because here at Genesis of Tulsa, we have put together this blog explaining the first and second generations of the Hyundai Genesis as well as details about its development and design, so keep reading!

Development and Design

The initial cost of creating and developing Genesis as its own autobrand was $533 million and the star of the show was the G80. The start of this new development began in 2008, but Genesis didn't become its own luxurious autobrand until 2015 when Hyundai officially separated from the branch, creating Genesis Motor. That fact alone is what skyrocketed Genesis sales into high demand world wide.

First Generation

The first generation was specifically designed towards showcasing a "progressive interpretation of the modern rear-wheel drive sports sedan". Hyundai honed in on the performance offerings that Genesis could bring and automakers even said that their goal was to provide the performance of a BMW 5-Series and the interior packaging of a 7-Series all for the price of a 3-Series. The G80 included a speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering, four=-wheel drive, disc brakes, multi-link front and 5-link rear suspension, as well as 3 different engine options. Standard features included cruise control, automatic headlights, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, leather seat-upholstery, and steering wheel, heated front seats with power adjustments, power windows, door locks, and mirrors, remote keyless entry and starting, and a seven speaker audio system to complete it.

Safety

When designing the first generation of Genesis, Hyundai automakers hit every mark when it comes to safety. In fact, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the first generation of Genesis 5/5 stars in the categories frontal driver, frontal passenger, side driver, side rear passenger, rollover, and was awarded the 2009-2010 Top Safety Pick.

Standard safety features for the first generation of Genesis included:

  • Front and rear side airbags

  • Side curtain airbags

  • ABS

  • Brake assist
