The Background
Although new-vehicle technology is one of the main reasons why consumers choose to purchase a vehicle over another, many recent models have been decorated with features that consumers have no interest in - adding more costs to both automakers and buyers.Â
According to Kristen Kolodge, the executive director of human machine interface at J.D. Power, because of this increased level of content, new-vehicle prices are situated at an all-time high: "This is fine," Kolodge states, "if owners are getting value for their money, but some features seem like a waste to many owners."
The J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) StudySM looks into this phenomenon; it finds that, for more than one in three advanced technologies, less than 50% of owners have used the features in their first 90-days of ownership. Those who don't use the technology most often say that they have no need for it. For instance, 61% of owners claim they have never used the in-vehicle digital market technology, and 51% of said owners claim they have no need for it. Vehicle owners feel the same way about driver communication technology as well, with 52% saying they have never used the technology and 40% of those saying they don't need it.Â
If technology is useful, effective and easily executed in a vehicle, an owner will most likely want to purchase another vehicle equipped with that technology. Features like camera rear-view mirror and ground view camera prove this, ranking highest in the study as well as ranking among the top three by owners wanting them on their next vehicle.Â
How the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) StudySM Works
The 2021 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study was created from the responses of 110,287 owners of new 2021 model-year vehicles, all which were surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study was conducted from February through July 2021.
The TXI Study correlates the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) SM and the J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM "by measuring how effectively each automotive brand brings new technologies to market." The TXI Study brings together the level of adoption of new technologies for each brand with the excellence in execution. The execution measurement takes into account how much owners like the technologies, as well as how many problems they experience while using them.
The Results: Highest Ranking Brands
In the study, Genesis was awarded the highest ranking overall and in the premium segment. With an Innovation score of 634, the automaker offers a generous number of advanced technologies across its product lineup.Â
Genesis' parent company, Hyundai, was ranked the highest in the mass market segment with a score of 519, with Kia, Nissan, Subaru and GMC falling shortly behind.
